It’s nothing fancy, nor particularly tastey – but perfect for a nice fresh sandwich like you’ve made it yourself. They also take extreme care when building the sandwiches, just watch the attention to detail.

The Sydney Light Rail is $3.80 for a single ticket (just do a loop) and they don’t have a timetable because they’re frequent enough (apparently). There are a number of stops in Pyrmont, see Light Rail the network map here.

It may be a useless form of transport for people living in Sydney, but it’s something different.

I (HEART) TRAM.

Dirt cheap, high quality Thai food for $9.90 (chicken/beef/pork with rice) is their lunch special which covers all the regular Thai meals. This is for dine-in or takeway.

I’m a big fan of the “Spicy Nitan Spicy” which isn’t actually that spicy. It’s chicken mince, sweet chilli jam, beans & capsicum with macadamia nuts. There’s also another spicier version of this called “Holy Chicky” which is the same, minus the macadamias and plus a shit load of chilli. They call it “Bangkok pavement style”.

The staff are all extremely friendly, meals prepared quickly and the spelling mistakes (on purpose, I’m sure) turn the menu into comedic reading.

Gourmet burgers at their best served with herbed thick-cut chips and delectable herb mayo for dipping. They have a very extensive menu with beef, chicken, lamb and vego. My favourite: Summer Sunset with bacon and pineapple.

Down in Harbourside, the line at Grill’d can get pretty long but if you get there early enough or phone through you should be fine. Seating is surprisingly easy to acquire as they have tables outside under the Harbourside entrance.

Another plus – they sell booze. This means you can easily give up a pub lunch in exchange for a better quality meal but still throw back a few sneaky brews.

Working from home today I’m not around my usual CBD lunch spots. If you follow me on Twitter I was ambitiously set out to make myself a sandwich and share some secret ingredients that I was hoping to discover.

All of a sudden I got stuck into work and went up the road in search of a quick fix.

I’ve walked past Cafe Berlin many times and it always seems busy and there’s a lot of attractive cakes in the window. We all like a bit of food porn.

The coffee was surprisingly good, I’m pretty loyal to Bertoni which is just down the road so I already had my nose up before I walked in. I got proved wrong and reminded that I’m a bit of a wanker sometimes.

The chicken sandwich…

And then comes the chicken sandwich – it seemed reasonable at $6.50. There were a bunch of extra options for $1 like bacon, cheese, turkish bread and avocado. I’m usually a sucker for all of these but I thought I’ll give it a try in the pure form before going mental on the add-ons.

I got home to discover plain white bread with chicken inside it. There was a bit of salt and pepper and for what it, it was surprisingly flavoursome. But seriously, would it not be normal to assume the sandwich will come with a bit of salad and perhaps some mayo? Even just a bit of mayo would’ve doubled the satisfaction factor.

Next time (yes, there will be a next time) I will load it up with extras and I’m sure it’ll make a decent sandwich. I’m still a bit bitter though, I must learn to forgive.

When I was a drunken teenager I remember ordering a Bacon Burger from a scumming takeaway shop at about 2am. I got home to discover a piece of bacon, lettuce and BBQ sauce inside a bun. I had the same feeling today, except from a place I would expect to over-complicate a chicken sandwich.

I thought this was a great find, but when I went back to Taste the second time at 12.30 I saw that a lot of other people have found it too. It can be a bit of a shit fight in their peak hour, but well worth it.

My baguette orgasm…

En-route to having my Taste baguette handed over, we always have a bit of a laugh in the process of ordering.I’m not a racist man and I’m not an ignorant man, but I obviously don’t pay much attention to faces when I am thinking about food.

Everytime I order, I lose the person I ordered with. It doesn’t help that behind the counter is a plethora of people, mostly young Asian girls. I always have to keep looking out for them to make eye contact with me before I can snatch and pay for a hasty escape to eat.

I’ve been many times, and sampled a chunk of the menu, but need to get around to the Vietnamese baguettes cause I’m sure they are their speciality.

I’m a chicken man. Call me a heathan but the Schnitzel is my favourite (so far). The rocket and honey mustard mayo on such fresh and crusty bread do it for me.

If you’re like me and have to find the next sandwich all the time you’ve got to include Taste.

The baguettes are very filling but not too much to make you regret finishing the last bites. They never skimp out on the meat and it’s a fine balance all the way through.

What else have they got?

The bakery is actually a bit on the side for the restaurant Taste. They serve a variety of baguettes (Pork Pate, Thai Sausage, Lemongrass Chicken, Roast Pork with Brie to name a few) all on amazingly fresh bread with suitable salad/sauce matched to each of the meats.

They also do sausage rolls/pies but I haven’t ventured that way just yet. Word has it they put on some “taste-e” soup in the winter too. That’s not what they call it though, they’re not as lame as I am.

Find out more

The baguettes from Taste are only $8.50 so just get your pinstriped, cufflinked self there and give it a crack.

There’s a few Taste’s popping up around the city so find the closest one to you on their website.
