Sushi Monger

The Causeway, Melbourne CBD

Sushi is a classic “fall back lunch” food. It’s a no brainer if you can’t be bothered thinking about what you feel like to eat, you probably can’t be bothered going far, and you’re worried about how many carbs you’ve eaten for the day. Well, maybe not the carbs thing but yeah, Sushi is easy.

Sushi Monger, down Union Lane between Bourke St and Little Collins is a little special than the average trip to your local Sushi conglomerate known as “Sushi Sushi”…The service so nice, they named it twice.

Head down to Sushi Monger as close to 12pm as you can, because the lines really start to build up from around 12.15pm and no one likes waiting ages for their food, especially when its only Sushi. But, wait, Sushi Monger isn’t “only Sushi”, it’s probably the best Sushi you’ll ever eat outside of Japan and all the line really does is show off how damn popular it is.

Once inside, you can pick from a range of traditional Japanese dishes, or you can go the 3 rolls and miso soup special for under $7, totally worth it. On my last occasion, I grabbed 3 rolls with miso soup, a plan inari and a bottle of that coloured vitamin healthy water crap for under $11, great value.

There is a huge range of rolls available and if you’re like me and only ever want your sushi fresh, Sushi Monger is the place for you. Because of their popularity, the turnover of rolls is high, which means between 12-2pm you’re only ever going to get a roll that has only been out on the rack for probably max 15mins.

10 out of 10 for sushi content freshness (salmon, chicken etc), 9 out of 10 for seaweed wrapper quality, always fresh and soft rice, Sushi Monger hits the mark in all the right places. The atmosphere is always great as it’s always packed, and with it situated in a cliche Melbourne lane way, you can’t help but have a good time. Oh yeah, and the owners and staff are really polite. Like, high level Japanese polite, it’s the best.

Basically, to summarise: Awesome, fresh Sushi. Great atmosphere & polite staff. Great value. What more can you say?
