Mekong Vietnam

241 Swanston St, Melbourne CBD

The menu at Mekong Vietnam is fairly substantial to say the least. 20 odd types of Rice Noodle Soup available, various Vermicelli options, 20 odd variations of Pho and many many more tradition Vietnamese dishes, make this place a go to for trying something new each visit. Along with the wide range of dishes on offer, the prices are decent too. Cheap, but not nasty, with a meal rarely costing more than $10.

The stock used in the Noodle Soup and variations of Pho (basic beef and chicken are the best), tastes amazing. I think they mix in a few spices, anise, and what tastes like cinnamon, which are all perfectly balanced to achieve a very eatable dish. I would recommend anyone to Mekong Vietnam if, firstly they needed to open their appetite to traditional Vietnamese, and secondly, they’re after something tasty, fairly healthy, and quick.

Staff are prompt and they really try to fit as many people inside as possible, which in my view adds to atmosphere. Going on your own, you may be sharing a table with 3 other strangers all going about their day. Going with a crew and you’ll enjoy a table together where musing over the menu will dominate conversation for the majority of your visit. Throw in some TV’s perched high on the walls in each corner playing an Asian news channel, and you’re almost in another world.

I like heading down to Mekong on my on more often than with a crowd. It’s a great way to get out of the office and completely break up the day with a new scene/vibe. Unfamiliar faces sometimes help a lot if you’re having “one of those days”.
